Grafana Cloud: monitoring a website with a synthetic check
Walk through synthetic monitoring in Grafana Cloud: create an HTTP check for a website, run it from three probe locations, add alerts for failures and slow responses, read the results, then delete the check.
This interactive Grafana Cloud demo walks you through creating a synthetic monitoring check step by step.
What this walkthrough covers
- Opening Testing & synthetics, then Synthetics and Checks
- Creating an API Endpoint check named grafana-check for https://grafana.com
- Choosing probe locations: Calgary, North Virginia and Ohio
- Setting the check to run every 2 minutes
- Testing the check and reading the HTTP response, status code 200
- Turning on alerts for failed checks and for latency over 300ms
- Saving the check and reading its uptime, reachability and latency
- Comparing the run logs from each probe
- Deleting the check
How to use it
Synthetic monitoring answers the first question in any outage: is it down for everyone, or only from here? Probes in different regions test the same URL on a schedule, so a failure from one location and a success from another points at the network path rather than the site.
The walkthrough ends by deleting the check. Every run counts toward usage on a metered plan, and the check form shows the estimate before you save, so learners see the cost side of monitoring as well as the alerting side.
Use it to introduce synthetic monitoring to a NOC or operations team before giving them access to a production stack.
How it was built
The workflow was recorded in Chrome with Demo Maker Pro while clicking through the real interface at a 1536 x 864 window. Each captured step keeps the page's HTML, CSS and text instead of flattening the screen into an image, so it stays sharp at any size.
The tooltips, the opening card and the finish screen were added afterwards in the desktop editor, then the walkthrough was published to Demo Maker Pro hosting. The same project can be exported as a single HTML file instead.
Build your own interactive HTML demo
If the system runs in Chrome, record the workflow you already know and turn it into a guided interactive demo. Create it locally, export the HTML yourself, or publish it for a shareable link.
Frequently asked questions
Does this walkthrough work offline?
The copy on this page is published to Demo Maker Pro hosting, so it needs a network connection. Any walkthrough made with Demo Maker Pro can also be exported as a single self-contained HTML file, which opens locally without an internet connection, from a laptop or a USB drive. A copy hosted on an intranet or LMS needs access to that host.
Do viewers need a Grafana Cloud account?
No. The walkthrough is a captured copy of the real app, so anyone can click through it without an account, a stack, or any probes of their own.
Can I make a walkthrough like this for my own system?
Yes. If the system runs in Chrome or Edge, Demo Maker Pro records it as you click and turns the flow into an interactive HTML demo you own.
